What Special Oral Health Issues Should I Know About as a Senior?

by | Sep 29, 2016 | Blog

Seniors may face some particular problems not typically seen in younger patients. Special care should be given to senior dental patients as they may be dealing with several circumstances that affect oral health.

Dry mouth is common as since salivary glands produce less saliva as people age. In addition to moisturizing the mouth, saliva also has some anti-microbial properties. Less saliva can mean a greater risk for cavities. Some medical conditions and many medications can cause dryness in the mouth. Dentists can recommend products to help restore and maintain moisture and protect teeth.

Dentists recommend using a toothpaste that contains fluoride to help protect seniors’ teeth from decay. Flossing is as important as ever for seniors to remove particles that cause decay.

Seniors should let their dentist know about any health problems or tooth sensitivity issues they may experience so that they can be adequately addressed by the dental team.
