People with aching teeth know real pain. The pain may be so severe that it keeps you up at night or interferes with your daily routine. Pain is not normal; it’s a sign that something is wrong and needs immediate attention. See your Glen Ellyn, IL dentist right away if you have toothache, swollen and painful gums, jaw pain, or frequent headaches and migraine. Dr. Gibbs will determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatments.
Severe toothache usually indicates a deep cavity and dental pulp infection. Dr. Gibbs will take X-rays to make an accurate diagnosis. If the tooth roots are healthy, Dr. Gibbs will remove decay and fill the tooth with a white filling.
If there is dental pulp infection, the dentist will present the options for alleviating the discomfort. We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day and eliminating their discomfort!
See our section on Dental Emergencies for more information.
Swollen and painful gums may be signs of severe periodontal disease or an impacted wisdom tooth. If there is severe gum disease, Dr. Gibbs will perform deep cleaning, scraping away toxins and hardened plaque above and below the gum line. Antimicrobial therapy may also be used to manage the growth of bacteria between cleaning appointments. If the gums fail to heal after conservative treatments, Dr. Gibbs may recommend reducing the size of gum pockets through surgery.
An impacted wisdom tooth is a third molar that has erupted only partially, getting stuck in the gums or bone and causing severe pain and infection. Dr. Gibbs will remove the tooth or section it before removing it piece by piece.
